Trælanípan: The Slave Cliff and Lake Above the Ocean
Hike to Trælanípan, the Slave Cliff, for stunning views, Viking history, and the famous 'lake above the ocean' optical illusion in the Faroe Islands.
Trælanípan, also known as Slave Cliff, is a striking natural landmark on Vágar Island in the Faroe Islands. The cliff's name originates from the Viking Age when it was supposedly used as a site to throw old or disobedient slaves into the sea. Rising 142 meters vertically from the ocean, Trælanípan offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the southernmost part of Streymoy, Hestur, Koltur, Sandoy, Skúvoy, and Suðuroy islands. The hike to Trælanípan is a relatively easy trek suitable for most fitness levels, taking about 45 minutes to an hour each way. The trail meanders past Lake Leitisvatn (also known as Sørvágsvatn), the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, which adds to the scenic experience. From a particular vantage point on Trælanípan, an optical illusion makes it appear as if the lake is suspended high above the ocean, creating the famous 'lake above the ocean' view. At the end of Lake Leitisvatn, the Bøsdalafossur waterfall plunges 30 meters directly into the Atlantic Ocean, further enhancing the area's natural beauty. The beautiful sea stack Geituskoradrangur can also be seen from the same viewpoint as Bøsdalafossur. Visitors should be cautious near the cliff edges and respect the natural surroundings. A hiking fee is required to access the trail, payable at the landowner's reception near the main gate. The trail may be closed due to extreme weather conditions or during hare hunting and lambing seasons, so checking ahead is recommended.
