Discover more about Tjørnuvík Kirkja

Tjørnuvík Kirkja, located in the remote village of Tjørnuvík on Streymoy Island, is more than just a place of worship; it's a symbol of the village's enduring spirit. Consecrated on October 18, 1937, the church replaced an older structure that had served the community for generations. The original plan was to inaugurate it a day earlier, but severe weather conditions postponed the event. In 1857, parts of the old church were moved to Saksun, leaving Tjørnuvík without a church of its own for 80 years. During this time, the village was part of the parish of Vík, a difficult journey due to the steep and treacherous path. The current white, wooden church with a red roof stands as a testament to traditional Faroese architectural style. Inside, visitors can admire the intricate wooden details and religious art. The church choir is known for performing Kingo hymns, by the 17th-century Danish poet and hymn writer Thomas Kingo. Located on Teigagøta 17, the church is easily recognizable. Viking graves found in the eastern part of the valley indicate that the area has been inhabited since the first Vikings arrived in the Faroe Islands. Today, Tjørnuvík is a popular destination, offering a tranquil escape and stunning views of the Risin and Kellingin sea stacks.
