Discover more about Risin og Kellingin viewpoint

Located on the northern coast of Eysturoy, the Risin og Kellingin viewpoint is a must-see destination in the Faroe Islands. The viewpoint provides an unobstructed vista of the two iconic sea stacks, Risin and Kellingin, which translate to 'The Giant and the Witch'. These impressive basalt columns stand tall against the crashing waves of the North Atlantic, offering a dramatic and unforgettable sight. Risin, the taller of the two stacks, reaches a height of 71 meters (233 feet), while Kellingin stands at 68 meters (223 feet). Over the centuries, the relentless force of the ocean has carved a hole through the base of Kellingin, creating a distinctive feature where the stack appears to stand on two legs. However, geologists predict that Kellingin may eventually succumb to the elements and collapse into the sea. The stacks derive their name from an old Faroese legend. According to the tale, the giant and the witch were sent by Iceland to drag the Faroe Islands closer to their land. They struggled through the night, but as dawn broke, the sunlight turned them to stone, forever fixed in their positions gazing towards Iceland. The viewpoint is easily accessible and provides ample opportunities for photography. The surrounding area is characterized by lush green hills and meadows, creating a picturesque backdrop to the dramatic coastal scenery. The ever-changing weather conditions in the Faroe Islands add to the allure, with rainbows and misty vistas frequently enhancing the experience.
