Discover more about Gasadalur

Gasadalur, meaning "Goose Valley," is a captivating village nestled on the western edge of Vágar Island in the Faroe Islands. Surrounded by towering mountains, including Árnafjall, the highest peak on Vágar, and overlooking the isle of Mykines, Gasadalur boasts a dramatic and picturesque setting. Until 2004, Gasadalur was the only village in the Faroe Islands without a road connection, making it one of the most isolated settlements. Residents relied on a challenging hike over the mountains or access by boat or helicopter. The postman famously traversed the mountain path three times a week to deliver mail. In 2004, the Gásadalstunnilin tunnel was constructed, connecting the village to the rest of the island by road and ending its isolation. The village's main attraction is the Múlafossur waterfall, which plunges 30 meters (98 ft) over a cliff and into the North Atlantic Ocean. The waterfall's dramatic backdrop, combined with the village's serene atmosphere, makes it a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Visitors can also explore the village itself, which offers a glimpse into traditional Faroese life. A small café, Gásadalsgarður, serves local Faroese food. While in Gasadalur, take the time to appreciate the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. During the summer months, you might even spot puffins nesting on the cliffs. Whether you hike the old post route or drive through the tunnel, Gasadalur offers an unforgettable experience of unspoiled nature and Faroese charm.
