Discover more about Kolovesi National Park

Kolovesi National Park, established in 1990, protects a significant portion of the Lake Saimaa archipelago and its unique ecosystem. Located within the regions of Enonkoski, Heinävesi and Savonlinna, the park spans 23 square kilometers of rugged, island-dotted terrain. The park's landscape, sculpted by the Ice Age, features towering cliffs rising from the water, creating a dramatic and unforgettable setting. Kolovesi is best known as a haven for canoeists and kayakers. The absence of motorboats in most of the park ensures a peaceful experience as you navigate the narrow, winding waterways. Keep an eye out for the Saimaa ringed seal, an endangered species endemic to Lake Saimaa, with approximately 15 seals residing within Kolovesi's waters. Beyond its stunning natural features, Kolovesi also holds historical significance. Ancient rock paintings, dating back some 5,000 years, adorn the cliffs of Ukonvuori, Vierunvuori and Havukkavuori, offering a glimpse into the lives of Finland's early settlers. For hikers, the park offers several trails, including the Nahkiaissalo Nature Trail (3.3 km), which leads through old-growth forests and past a historic tar-burning pit. The Mäntysalo Trail (3.8 km) explores the island's varied forest scenery and can only be reached by boat. Kolovesi provides nine designated camping areas for overnight stays, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the park's tranquil atmosphere. Please note that camping is only permitted in these marked areas.
