The museum resides within the oldest school building in Säräisniemi, dating back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and converted into a school in 1884. The Säräisniemi Museum and Homeland Association, established in 1957, diligently maintains the museum. The museum's collection, compiled from various Vaala villages in the late 1950s and supplemented since, showcases the region's heritage with over 3,500 items. Visitors can explore permanent exhibitions and rotating displays. In the courtyard, you'll find the Juusola windmill from the 1830s, the Säräisniemi grain warehouse from the 1860s, and the Alila barn from the 1880s. Säräisniemi itself boasts a rich history. The Finnish settlement began in 1552 when the Swedish King Gustav Vasa encouraged Savonian people to settle the Lake Oulujärvi area. Säräisniemi became a chapel parish in 1779, separating from Paltamo parish, and an independent parish in 1865. The Säräisniemi Church, completed in 1781, stands as the second church in the lake region. Today, Säräisniemi is part of the Rokua Geopark, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and cultural attractions.
