Koitelinkoski, often referred to as Koiteli by locals, is a breathtaking rapids area along the Kiiminkijoki River, located in the Kiiminki district, approximately 25 kilometers from Oulu city center. This natural state area is a provincially valuable tourist attraction with cultural and historical significance, drawing an estimated 80,000 visitors annually. The scenic value of Koitelinkoski is defined by its riverbeds, rapids, small islands, shores, and overall natural environment. The Kiiminkijoki River splits into smaller streams as it flows through the area, creating a series of impressive rapids and small islands. These islands, including Sahasaari, Myllysaari, and Tulisaari, are connected by suspension bridges, making it a fun adventure, especially for children. Historically, Koiteli has been a significant center along the Kiiminkijoki river, with traces of industry, travel, and trade evident in the area. The name 'Koiteli' is believed to be of Sámi origin, meaning 'the one in the middle'. The rapids were harnessed for sawmills in the 19th century, and there were even plans for a power plant. Today, Koitelinkoski is a recreational area where visitors can hike, fish, canoe, kayak, and enjoy the beauty of nature. There are several campfire sites available for picnics, and firewood is typically delivered during the summer months. In the summer, a café called Tunnelmatupa operates on Sahasaari island.
