Discover more about Oulu Cathedral

Oulu Cathedral, or Oulun tuomiokirkko, is a significant landmark in the center of Oulu, serving as the main church for the Diocese of Oulu. The cathedral's history dates back to 1777 when it was first erected as a tribute to King Gustav III of Sweden and named after his wife, Sofia Magdalena. Designed initially by Daniel Hagman, the church was constructed from natural stone, large enough to accommodate Oulu's entire population of 2,400 at the time. In 1822, a large fire destroyed much of Oulu, including the wooden structures of the church. The stone walls, however, remained intact, and the church was rebuilt according to the neoclassical designs of Carl Ludvig Engel. Engel's reconstruction, completed in 1832, included a new central dome, roof structures, and a tower, which was finished in 1845. The interior reflects an Empire style, accommodating over a thousand seats. Today, Oulu Cathedral stands as a testament to the city's resilience and architectural evolution. The cathedral also holds historical artifacts, including a portrait of Johannes Messenius dating back to 1611. The churchyard also features Pikku-Sofia, a children's church that is a scale model of Oulu's first wooden church.
