History of Jacksonville

Jacksonville, originally known as Cowford due to its location at a narrow point in the St. Johns River where cattle once crossed, was officially renamed in 1822 in honor of President Andrew Jackson. Early settlers were attracted by the area's fertile land, river access, and strategic location.
