Discover more about Fontaine des Prêcheurs

The Fontaine des Prêcheurs, located on the Place des Prêcheurs in Aix-en-Provence, is a stunning example of baroque monumental and decorative style. Created in 1758 by Jean Pancrace Chastel, the fountain has become a beloved gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. Before the construction of Cours Mirabeau, the Place des Prêcheurs was the busiest thoroughfare in Aix-en-Provence. Merchants sold their wares, actors performed, and chivalrous tournaments were held. The square deserved a majestic monument, and Chastel delivered with this fountain. The fountain consists of a square basin with a low rim. In the center stands an impressive pedestal adorned with draperies. Water flows from large, inverted shells. At the center, a Calissanne stone obelisk rises, topped by a sphere and a white eagle with spread wings. The eagle, a symbol of reason, was included at the insistence of city officials and is said to glare at the location where the city's scaffold once stood. The pedestal features four medallions depicting important figures: Sextius Calvinus, the founder of Aix; Charles III of Maine, the last count of Provence; Louis XV; and Louis XVIII. The original medallions, installed in 1748, were destroyed in 1793 and later restored in 1833. The Fontaine des Prêcheurs was classified as a historical monument in 1905.
