Discover more about Place des Quatre-Dauphins

Located in the Mazarin district, Place des Quatre-Dauphins offers a serene escape from the lively Cours Mirabeau. The square's name, meaning "Square of the Four Dolphins," comes from the fountain built in 1667 by Jean-Claude Rambot, featuring four dolphins sculpted from Sainte-Baume stone. Each dolphin supports a column, and they encircle a central obelisk, which has been topped with a statue of Saint Michael, a fleur-de-lys, a Maltese cross and finally a pine cone. The Mazarin district was conceived in 1646 by Archbishop Michel Mazarin, who sought to expand Aix-en-Provence southward, modeling it after Italian Renaissance urban planning with a grid-like layout. The square is surrounded by elegant hôtels particuliers (private mansions) dating back to the 17th century, adding to its architectural charm. The Rue du Quatre Septembre, which leads to the Cours Mirabeau, was considered the most beautiful street in the new district. Today, Place des Quatre-Dauphins remains a cultural hub, hosting various events throughout the year. Visitors can relax by the fountain, admire the architecture, and explore the nearby boutiques and art galleries. The square's pedestrian-friendly design and lush greenery create a relaxing environment for all.
