Discover more about Place d'Albertas

Place d'Albertas, a hidden gem in Aix-en-Provence, captivates visitors with its timeless charm and architectural beauty. This exquisite square, tucked away from the main tourist routes, provides a glimpse into the city's aristocratic past and serves as a tranquil oasis amidst urban life. Created in the 18th century, the square is named after the d'Albertas family, who commissioned its design. Jean-Baptiste d'Albertas, seeking a more appealing view from his residence, acquired and demolished existing buildings to create the space. The design was entrusted to Georges Vallon, who created a harmonious ensemble of buildings in the Baroque style. The square is bordered by four mansions with nearly identical facades and wrought-iron balconies. The fountain at the center of the square was added in the 20th century. Designed by students from the School of Arts and Crafts of Aix-en-Provence, it features a grand chalice made of cast iron set within a large circular pool. The square is a hub of social activity, hosting local events and markets. It's a place to relax, admire the architecture, and soak up the Provençal sun.
