Discover more about Site du Goulet

Site du Goulet is more than just a picturesque location; it's the heart of the Volvic mineral water story. Situated in the commune of Volvic, within the Puy-de-Dôme department of France, this site serves as the gateway to the vast Volvic water catchment area. This area, spanning 38 square kilometers, is naturally protected within the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, ensuring the purity of the water that filters through its volcanic layers. The history of Goulet is intertwined with the story of Volvic itself. At the turn of the 20th century, water scarcity was a significant issue in Volvic. In 1927, a groundbreaking discovery occurred when a high-quality water source was found near the Goulet, thanks to efforts of the inter-communal trade union for Riom, Volvic and Châtel Guyon. This discovery resolved Volvic's water shortage and paved the way for the commercialization of Volvic water. In the 1930s, the first bottling of Volvic water began, marking the start of its journey to becoming an internationally recognized brand. The Goulet site became the primary industrial location for collecting this natural mineral water. Over time, as demand grew, a new bottling plant was established in Chancet in 1973, eventually leading to the relocation of all production activities. However, the Goulet's historical significance remains, and it has been transformed into a space for recreation, education, and appreciation of nature. Today, visitors to Site du Goulet can explore the area through various hiking trails that wind through the forests and heathland. These trails offer a chance to experience the natural environment that contributes to the unique qualities of Volvic water. Sports facilities, including a fitness trail and an orienteering course, provide opportunities for active recreation. One of the highlights of Site du Goulet is the Information Centre, where visitors can delve into the secrets of Volvic natural mineral water. The center explains the fascinating geological processes that filter the water through six layers of volcanic lava, protecting it until it is bottled. Exhibits also highlight the Société des Eaux de Volvic's commitment to environmental protection, resource preservation, and sustainable practices. The town of Volvic itself is also worth exploring. Known as the "town of stone and water," Volvic boasts a charming diversity of attractions, including narrow streets lined with stone buildings, fountains, a feudal château, and a Romanesque church. The town's history is closely linked to the durable, grey Volvic stone that has been quarried there since the 12th century. The stone has been used in numerous buildings and monuments in the region, including the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde statue overlooking the town. Beyond the immediate vicinity of Site du Goulet and Volvic, the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park offers a wealth of natural beauty and outdoor activities. The Chaîne des Puys, a range of extinct volcanoes, provides a stunning backdrop for hiking, cycling, and other outdoor pursuits. Nearby towns such as Riom and Mozac also offer historical and cultural attractions. Visiting Site du Goulet is an opportunity to connect with nature, learn about the origins of a world-famous mineral water, and appreciate the commitment to environmental sustainability. Whether you're interested in hiking, exploring the local history, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, Site du Goulet offers a unique and enriching experience.
