Discover more about Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption

Rising from the Place de la Victoire, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is Clermont-Ferrand's most iconic landmark. Constructed entirely from black lava rock sourced from the Volvic quarries, the cathedral presents a unique and imposing silhouette. This dramatic architectural statement distinguishes it as the only "black cathedral" in mainland France. The site has been a place of Christian worship since the 5th century. Bishop Namatius established the city's first cathedral around 450 C.E., but it faced repeated destruction and reconstruction. The current Gothic structure began in 1248 under Bishop Hugues de la Tour, inspired by Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Master builder Jean Deschamps led the initial construction, utilizing volcanic stone for its robust qualities. Construction faced interruptions, and the cathedral remained unfinished for centuries. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the famous architect, completed the façade and added the two spires between 1862 and 1901. The cathedral's exterior showcases classic Gothic elements, including pointed arches, rib vaults, and ornate decorations. The twin spires soar to a height of 96.1 meters, offering panoramic views of Clermont-Ferrand. Inside, light filters through the 13th and 14th-century stained glass windows, casting colorful patterns across the nave. The interior also features a 16th-century clock with automatons. The crypt dates back to the 10th-century, incorporating a 4th-century white marble sarcophagus.
