Murol Castle, or Château de Murol, is a magnificent medieval fortress dramatically perched above the village of Murol in the Puy-de-Dôme department of Auvergne, France. Its imposing silhouette against the volcanic Auvergne landscape creates an unforgettable sight.The castle's history dates back to the 12th century when it was first constructed on a basalt outcrop to control three important regional roads. Over the centuries, it was expanded, fortified, and transformed by various noble families, each leaving their mark on its architecture and character. The original 12th-century structure was reinforced in the 14th century by Guillaume de Sam, who added the keep, a second chapel, and the eastern buildings. In the 15th century, it passed to the d'Estaing family, who further enhanced its prestige. In the 16th century, François I d'Estaing added a massive curtain wall and towers.Murol Castle withstood attacks during the Catholic League in the 16th century. Jean d'Estaing later added a Renaissance pavilion, blending medieval strength with Renaissance elegance. Although spared from destruction by Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century, it was later used as a prison and even a hideout for bandits during the French Revolution. In the 19th century, it was pillaged for its stones until it was classified as a historical monument in 1889.Today, owned by the commune of Murol, the castle has been carefully restored as a major tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the ramparts, towers, and living quarters, gaining insight into medieval life. Costumed characters and reenactments add an extra layer of authenticity.
