Murol Castle: A Medieval Fortress in the Auvergne

Murol Castle, or Château de Murol, is a magnificent medieval fortress dramatically perched above the village of Murol in the Puy-de-Dôme department of Auvergne, France. The original 12th-century structure was reinforced in the 14th century by Guillaume de Sam, who added the keep, a second chapel, and the eastern buildings. In the 15th century, it passed to the d'Estaing family, who further enhanced its prestige. In the 16th century, François I d'Estaing added a massive curtain wall and towers.Murol Castle withstood attacks during the Catholic League in the 16th century. Jean d'Estaing later added a Renaissance pavilion, blending medieval strength with Renaissance elegance. Although spared from destruction by Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century, it was later used as a prison and even a hideout for bandits during the French Revolution.
