Walking

From the center of Ceyrat, walk east on Avenue de la Libération towards Rue des Chapelles. Turn left onto Rue des Chapelles, then continue straight until you reach Avenue de Fontimbert. Follow Avenue de Fontimbert uphill; the trailhead to Ruine du Château de Montrognon will be on your left at the end of the road. The walk to the trailhead takes about 15-20 minutes. From there, it's approximately a 20-minute hike up a moderately steep path to the ruins. No costs are associated with this approach.
Public Transport

From Clermont-Ferrand, take bus line 4 or 26 to the 'Ceyrat Fontimbert' stop. From the bus stop, walk along Avenue de Fontimbert uphill; the trailhead to Ruine du Château de Montrognon will be on your left at the end of the road. The walk to the trailhead takes about 10 minutes. From there, it's approximately a 20-minute hike up a moderately steep path to the ruins. A single bus fare costs approximately €1.60.
Driving

From Clermont-Ferrand, take the D941 road towards Ceyrat. Once in Ceyrat, navigate to Avenue de Fontimbert. Continue driving uphill on Avenue de Fontimbert until you reach the end of the road, where there is limited parking available. Parking is free. From the parking area, it's approximately a 20-minute hike up a moderately steep path to the ruins. Parking can be limited, especially during peak season.

The Ruine du Château de Montrognon, a captivating historical site in Ceyrat, France, offers visitors a unique blend of medieval history and stunning natural beauty. Situated on a volcanic puy (peak) reaching 699 meters, the ruins provide panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Clermont-Ferrand, the fertile Limagne plain, and the iconic Chaîne des Puys volcanoes. Originally constructed around 1190 by Robert I, the Dauphin of Auvergne, the Château de Montrognon served as a strategic military outpost. Its elevated position allowed for control over the surrounding territory, and it played a significant role in the region's feudal history. The castle's name, derived from the Latin "Mons Rugosus" (rough mountain), reflects the rugged terrain of its volcanic foundation. The castle was the center of the seigneury of the Montrognon family, who were vassals of the Dauphins of Auvergne. In its prime, the Château de Montrognon featured a trapezoidal layout with a curtain wall connecting several flanking towers. Battlements and merlons protected the sentry walk, while the courtyard housed the keep (of which the current tower is believed to be a remnant) and living quarters for the lord, his family, and a garrison of up to 100 soldiers. The keep had three vaulted stories topped by a watchtower. A postern gate, overlooking Ceyrat, was defended by a drawbridge and a ditch. Unfortunately, the Château de Montrognon suffered the fate of many feudal castles in France. In 1633, under the orders of King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu, the castle was dismantled as part of a policy to curb the power of the nobility. The castle was partially razed. Over the centuries, further decay occurred. One of the main towers collapsed in 1828, and in 1840, windstorms caused additional damage to the remaining tower and walls. Local residents scavenged stones from the ruins to build their own homes. Despite its ruined state, the Château de Montrognon retains a captivating charm. The remaining tower, though weathered by time, stands as a testament to the castle's former grandeur. Visitors can explore the ruins, imagining life within its walls centuries ago. The site offers a tangible connection to the medieval past, allowing one to contemplate the lives of the lords, soldiers, and villagers who once inhabited this strategic location. The ascent to the Château de Montrognon is a rewarding experience in itself. A moderately steep path leads from Avenue de Fontimbert in Ceyrat to the summit.
