The Hôtel Duché des Tournelles, situated at 18 Place Vendôme in Paris's 1st arrondissement, is a building with a rich history. Constructed between 1723 and 1725 by architect Germain Boffrand for Guillaume Cressart, it stands on land that once belonged to financier Nicolas-Jérôme Herlaut. The building exemplifies classic French architecture and adds to the overall grandeur of Place Vendôme.Place Vendôme itself has a fascinating past. The square's origins trace back to the early 18th century when Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the architect behind the Palace of Versailles, acquired the land as a real estate venture. When his plans faltered, King Louis XIV stepped in, commissioning Mansart to design a public square to rival Place des Vosges. Over the centuries, Place Vendôme has been known as Place des Conquêtes and Place Louis le Grand.The square has witnessed historical events, including the destruction of statues during the French Revolution and the toppling of the Vendôme Column during the Paris Commune of 1871. Today, Place Vendôme is synonymous with luxury, housing high-end boutiques like Dior, Chanel and Cartier. Since 1997, the Hôtel Duché des Tournelles has been owned by Chanel, serving as the home for its watchmaking and jewelry operations.

From the Tuileries Garden, walk north towards Rue de Castiglione, which leads directly to the Place. From the Opéra Garnier, walk along Rue de la Paix towards the Place. Both walks are approximately 5-10 minutes.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available in Paris. A short taxi ride from a nearby location such as the Louvre Museum or Gare du Nord to Place Vendôme will typically cost between €8 and €15, depending on traffic and time of day. Keep in mind that there is a pick-up charge of €4.
