Nestled in the Aveyron department near Martiel, the Loc-Dieu Abbey offers a serene escape into history and nature. Founded in 1123, this Cistercian abbey, originally named 'Devil's Place' due to the surrounding dolmens, was transformed into a 'Place of God' by the monks. The abbey's architecture showcases a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, reflecting its evolution over centuries. Fortified in the 15th century after being burnt down during the Hundred Years' War, it served as a refuge, even hiding masterpieces like the Mona Lisa during WWII. Today, owned by the Cibiel family, the abbey welcomes visitors to explore its historic church, cloister, chapter room, and the enchanting 40-hectare romantic park, complete with a lake and watchtower. It's a journey through time, art, and peaceful landscapes.

From Villefranche-de-Rouergue, take the D926 towards Montauban. After approximately 5km, turn right onto the D115, following signs for Loc-Dieu Abbey. Continue for 500m to the parking area in front of the park entrance. Parking is free and located 200m from the monument's entrance.

Take the bus route 203 from Villefranche-de-Rouergue to the stop closest to Loc-Dieu Abbey. From there, it's approximately a 20-minute walk (about 1.5km) to the abbey. Check local bus schedules for current fares and times. The bus ticket costs approximately €2-3.
