From the Gare de La Rochelle (train station), head northeast on Avenue Jean Moulin toward Place Pierre Sémard. Continue onto Place de la Gare, then turn right onto Rue Pierre Loti. Turn left onto Quai Valin, then turn right onto Cours des Dames. Continue onto Place des Britanniques. The church will be on your left. The walk is approximately 15 minutes. There are no costs associated with walking.

Église Saint-Nicolas, situated on Place des Britanniques in La Rochelle, boasts a rich and complex history that mirrors the city's own story. The church's origins trace back to around 1145 when a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas was erected on a small island. This chapel became a parish, but like many other churches in La Rochelle, it was destroyed during the Protestant era; only its bell tower was preserved to serve as a watchtower.Following the Great Siege of La Rochelle, the parish was re-established, and the reconstruction of the church concluded in 1662. However, the church faced further challenges during the French Revolution. In 1887, after much deliberation, the decision was made to deconsecrate Église Saint-Nicolas, and the building was repurposed by the customs authorities. Later, it was acquired by a cooperative society and used as a warehouse, before being transformed into a hotel in 1978, retaining only its facade.Concurrently, a new church was constructed in the Tasdon neighborhood, and the title of Saint-Nicolas was transferred from the old church to the new one. Today, Église Saint-Nicolas continues to serve as a place of worship, with regular services and community events. Its enduring presence is a reminder of La Rochelle's past and its ongoing commitment to faith and heritage.
