Discover more about St. Nicholas Tower

The St. Nicholas Tower, along with the Chain Tower and the Lantern Tower, stands as a powerful symbol of La Rochelle's historical maritime strength. Construction on the tower began around 1345 and was completed in 1376. For centuries, the tower served as a defensive lock on the seafront. Legend says that the fairy Mélusine built the tower, dropping stones from the sky. In reality, the tower's construction on unstable ground of mud and oak piles caused it to slightly tilt, earning it the nickname "the French Tower of Pisa". Reinforcements were made to correct the imbalance, and the slight tilt is still visible today. Inside, a labyrinth of staircases and corridors wind through the thick walls. The tower served not only as a military structure but also as a palatial residence for the captain of the tower, his family, and soldiers. The French government classified the St. Nicholas Tower as a historic monument in 1879. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of the city and the ocean.
