Discover more about St. Nicholas Tower

The St. Nicholas Tower, or Tour Saint-Nicolas, is one of three medieval towers guarding La Rochelle's harbor. Construction began around 1345 and finished in 1376. Together with the Chain Tower (Tour de la Chaîne), it controlled access to the Old Port (Vieux Port) for centuries, with a large chain that could be raised between the two towers to block ships. The tower served not only as a military structure but also as a palatial residence. The captain of the tower, appointed by La Rochelle's mayor, resided here with family and soldiers. The tower's architecture is a labyrinth of staircases and corridors built within the thick walls. Standing at 38 meters (or 42 meters, depending on the source), the tower was built upon unstable ground of mud and oak piles, causing it to lean slightly during construction. Reinforcements were added from the second floor to correct the imbalance, but a slight tilt is still visible, sometimes leading to the nickname "the French Tower of Pisa". Over the centuries, the tower has served various purposes, including a prison. In 1879, it was classified as a Monument Historique, ensuring its preservation. Today, visitors can explore the tower, climb to the top, and enjoy panoramic views of La Rochelle and the Atlantic Ocean. Note that the Tour Saint-Nicolas is closed until further notice, due to ongoing solidification work.
