The Château de Villerouge-Termenès, located in the heart of the village of Villerouge-Termenès, stands as a remarkable example of medieval military architecture. Unlike many other Cathar castles perched atop rocky cliffs, this fortress is situated in a valley, next to a river, offering visitors an accessible glimpse into the past.Originally built in the 12th century, the castle was modified in the 14th century and served as a seat of power for the Archbishops of Narbonne from 1110 until the French Revolution. These prelates exerted their religious and political dominance over the surrounding region from within its walls. The castle's architecture features imposing crenellated rampart walls and four round towers, reflecting its design for both formidable defense and architectural grandeur.The Château de Villerouge-Termenès is also known for being the site where Guilhem Bélibaste, the last known Cathar 'Perfect', was burned alive in 1321, marking a significant moment in the history of the Cathar resistance. Visitors can explore the castle's history through an audio-visual tour that details the lives of Guilhem Bélibaste and Bernard de Farges, the Archbishop of Narbonne, providing insights into Catharism and the daily life of the Baylie in the 14th century. The castle also hosts a Medieval Rôtisserie, a unique restaurant offering cuisine from the 14th century.

The Château de Villerouge-Termenès is located in the village of Villerouge-Termenès, making it easily accessible on foot from most points within the village. From the center of the village, follow the signs for the Château. The walk is short and straightforward, taking you through the village streets to the castle entrance.
Public Transport
To reach Château de Villerouge-Termenès by public transportation, take a train from Carcassonne to Limoux. Trains run regularly, and the journey takes about 30 minutes. Once you arrive in Limoux, you can catch a regional bus (Ligne 1) that goes to Villerouge-Termenès. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as services may be limited, especially on weekends. The bus will drop you off close to the village, and it is just a short walk to the castle. Bus fare from Limoux to Villerouge-Termenès is approximately €3.

If driving, the Château de Villerouge-Termenès is located at Carrièra del Castel, 11330 Villerouge-Termenès. From Carcassonne, take the D611 towards Limoux. Continue on the D611 until you reach the D118. Turn left onto the D118 and follow the signs towards Villerouge-Termenès. The castle will be visible as you approach the village. Free parking is available at the Winegrower's Cooperative, a short walk from the castle. Be careful crossing the road from the parking area. Parking for camper vans is available at Parking cave coopérative, Rota del Termnès.
