    From the Carcassonne train station, walk straight along Boulevard Maréchal Joffre. Cross the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge) and follow the signs to the Cité Médiévale. The walk is approximately 2 km and takes around 30 minutes.

    From the Carcassonne train station, take the RTCA bus. Several bus lines stop near the Cité. Check the RTCA website for the most up-to-date schedules and routes. A single ticket costs around €1.20.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are readily available in Carcassonne. A taxi from the train station to the Cité will cost approximately €15-€20, depending on traffic. Taxi stands are located outside the train station.

    If driving, paid parking is available near the Cité. Parking P0 is the closest, located near the Porte Narbonnaise, about 200 meters from the entrance. Parking P1 is about 400 meters from the entrance. Parking rates start at €1 for 15 minutes, with increasing rates for longer durations. Free parking is available for the first 30 minutes. Evening parking (from 8 PM to 8 AM) is free from October 1st to November 30th and from January 1st to April 30th.

Originally settled in the 6th century BC, the site evolved into a Roman town and later a formidable medieval citadel. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, drawing visitors from around the globe to explore its well-preserved fortifications and delve into its fascinating past. The fortress boasts a double-walled structure encompassing 52 towers and barbicans, extending over three kilometers. These walls, built from the late 3rd to the end of the 13th century, were partially restored in the 19th century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, giving the site its current appearance. The castle itself, the Château Comtal, was constructed in the 12th century by the Trencavel family and modified over the centuries. Inside the walls, visitors can explore various parts of the castle, including the ramparts, the hoardings, and the projection room, and lapidary museum. A tour of the ramparts provides a 360° view from the Pyrenees to the vineyards. The site is open year-round, with extended hours during the summer months. Visitors can choose between self-guided tours or guided tours available in multiple languages.
