Discover more about Belvédère de Sugiton

Perched high above the Calanques National Park, the Belvédère de Sugiton provides an unforgettable panorama of one of France's most stunning natural landscapes. This viewpoint, also known as 'la Tour d'Orient' (The Oriental Tower) , is accessible after a moderately challenging hike and rewards visitors with sweeping vistas of the Sugiton creek, the Mediterranean Sea, and the rugged, sculpted cliffs that characterize the Calanques. The turquoise waters stretch to the horizon, framed by the dramatic white limestone cliffs shaped over millennia by wind and water. Below lies the Sugiton creek, with its secluded coves and pristine beaches. From the Belvédère, one can also observe the Calanque de Morgiou as if from an airplane. In the distance, you can see the Marseilleveyre massif, the island of Maïre, and the Riou archipelago. The Belvédère de Sugiton sits on the site of a former military watch post, chosen for its clear views of the coast. The name 'Sugiton' may come from the Latin word 'saxum,' meaning 'rock,' or more specifically, 'isolated rock'. The site is ecologically rich, home to diverse species that nest on the cliffs, including bats and swifts. The cliffs are also popular for climbing, with around a hundred routes available. Part of the site is closed in the spring to protect nesting peregrine falcons. The hike to the Belvédère de Sugiton is an experience in itself, with trails winding through fragrant pine forests and over rocky terrain.
