Discover more about Massif des Calanques

The Massif des Calanques is a remarkable geological formation that began over 200 million years ago. During the Mesozoic era, the accumulation of marine sediments formed the limestone bedrock. Tectonic shifts caused the massif to emerge, and erosion over millions of years created the dramatic valleys and cliffs we see today. The word 'calanque' itself comes from the Provençal word 'calanco,' meaning a small rocky creek, combined with 'anca,' indicating a steep slope. Designated as a national park in 2012, the Massif des Calanques protects a unique biodiversity. The park is home to various plant species adapted to the harsh, dry environment, as well as diverse animal life, including birds, reptiles, and marine creatures. The Calanques offer a variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking is a popular way to explore the area, with trails ranging from easy coastal walks to challenging climbs. Many calanques are accessible by boat, offering opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The park also has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Paleolithic period. The Cosquer Cave, located in the Calanque de Morgiou, contains prehistoric paintings and engravings. Visiting the Massif des Calanques requires some planning. Access to certain areas is regulated, especially during the summer months, due to the risk of fire. It's essential to check the current conditions and regulations before heading out. Some calanques, like Sugiton, require reservations during peak season to limit erosion.
