Discover more about Underground citadel of Verdun

The Underground Citadel of Verdun, or Citadelle Souterraine de Verdun, is a remarkable historical site that offers a glimpse into the strategic importance of Verdun during World War I. Constructed in the late 19th century, this subterranean fortress spans 7 kilometers of galleries beneath the 17th-century upper citadel. These tunnels served as a refuge, command post, and supply base during the war, housing up to 2,000 men. The citadel even had offices, ammunition stores, a makeshift hospital, dormitories, a bakery, and a telephone exchange with electricity. Visitors embark on a journey through time, exploring the extensive underground network. The galleries, dug deep into the rock, provide a chilling yet fascinating insight into life during wartime. A highlight of any visit is the opportunity to see where the Unknown Soldier was chosen in 1920. The citadel has embraced modern technology to enhance the visitor experience. A guided tour aboard a wire-guided car takes you through the galleries, immersing you in the sights and sounds of the past with augmented reality. This innovative approach brings the history of Verdun and its role in World War I to life, offering an educational and moving experience for all who visit. The citadel's roots stretch back to the 16th century when King Henri II of France seized the city from the Holy Roman Empire. The initial fortifications were constructed between 1567 and 1634. In 1648, after the city was permanently attached to the kingdom of France, Vauban enhanced Verdun into a formidable stronghold. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the city became a central piece in the Séré de Rivières system, a network of forts designed to protect France from future invasions. It was during this time that the underground galleries were excavated, creating what is now known as the Verdun Citadel.
