Nestled within the historic walled city of Saint-Malo, the St. Louis Bastion is a captivating landmark that showcases the city's rich maritime heritage. Originally constructed in the 17th century, this bastion served as a strategic military fortification, designed to protect the city from invaders. Today, it stands as a testament to French military architecture, inviting visitors to explore its storied past and enjoy panoramic views of the coastline.
The bastion is named in honor of Louis XIV. As you stroll through the bastion, you can admire the intricate details of the stonework and imagine the bustling life that once filled its walls. The nearby ramparts provide an excellent vantage point to see the expansive sea and the picturesque old town of Saint-Malo. The houses bordering the Bastion are the only survivors of the bombing of 1944 and date from 1727.
The statue in the center is that of Duguay Trouin, another famous privateer and Malouin admiral. Courageous and respected by his men, he quickly rose through the ranks of the military hierarchy. His most famous expedition was the one that led to the capture of Rio in 1711.
The site not only offers a journey into history but also serves as a peaceful retreat from the crowded tourist spots. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along the bastion's pathways, soaking in the serenity of the surroundings.

Walking
From the Saint-Malo train station (Gare de Saint-Malo), exit the station and head southeast on Rue de la Gare. Continue straight for about 600 meters until you reach the junction with Rue du Général de Gaulle. Turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle and walk towards the coast. When you reach the promenade along the sea, turn left and follow the path along the beach, enjoying the views. Continue until you arrive at the fortified city walls (Les Remparts). Follow the walls to the right until you reach the Porte de Dinan, the main entrance to the old town. Enter through the gate and walk straight, passing shops and cafes. Continue straight to Place Chateaubriand, then take Rue de l'Orme to the left. Finally, turn right onto Rue d'Orléans, and you will find St. Louis Bastion at 1 Rue d'Orléans.
Public Transport
From the Saint-Malo train station (Gare de Saint-Malo), take bus line 2 towards La Madeleine. Get off at the 'Porte de Dinan' stop, which is one of the main entrances to the old town. Once you exit the bus, walk through the Porte de Dinan and continue walking straight until you reach Place Chateaubriand. From there, take Rue de l'Orme to the left and then right onto Rue d'Orléans. St. Louis Bastion is located at 1 Rue d'Orléans. A single ticket is valid for 1 hour and 30 minutes on the bus and costs approximately €2.7.
