History of Tignes

The area now known as Tignes has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological evidence suggests that early settlers were attracted to the region due to its fertile land and abundant water sources from the Isère River. The early economy was based on agriculture and livestock.
During the medieval period, Tignes was a small mountain village. The community was largely self-sustaining, relying on farming and seasonal transhumance. The local church, Saint-Jacques de Tignes, built in the 13th century, was a central feature of the village and remains a historical landmark.
One of the most significant events in Tignes' history was the construction of the Chevril Dam in the early 1950s. The dam was built to generate hydroelectric power, resulting in the flooding of the original village of Tignes in 1952.
