Discover more about Galerie des Batailles

The Galerie des Batailles, the largest room in the Palace of Versailles, stands as a testament to French military history. Created by Louis-Philippe and opened in 1837, the gallery showcases 33 monumental paintings that depict nearly 15 centuries of French military successes, from the victory of Clovis at Tolbiac in 496 to Napoleon's triumph at Wagram in 1809. The gallery itself is an impressive space, measuring 120 meters long and 13 meters wide. The paintings, each approximately 5 meters high and 5 to 7 meters wide, were created by prominent artists such as Horace Vernet, Eugène Delacroix, and François Gérard. They are arranged chronologically, providing visitors with a visual timeline of French military history. Complementing the paintings are 82 busts of notable military leaders, further emphasizing France's martial glory. Louis-Philippe intended the Galerie des Batailles to be a symbol of national unity, representing all the dynasties that had ruled France. The gallery has remained largely unchanged since its inauguration and stands as one of the most impressive examples of museum design from the 19th century. Today, it continues to be a highlight for visitors to the Palace of Versailles.
