Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Mulhouse, take a train to Kruth. From Kruth, it's approximately a 45-minute walk to the lake. Alternatively, during weekends in June and September, and daily in July and August, you can take the 'Navette des Crêtes' bus from Kruth to access the area. Train tickets from Mulhouse to Kruth cost approximately €5-€13. Bus tickets from Dornach Gare Dmc to Kruth cost approximately €16-€23.

    From Wildenstein, head towards Place des Verriers. From there, follow the D27 towards the Col de Bramont or the D13B towards the Col d'Oderen, depending on which entrance to the reserve you prefer. Parking is available at both locations. Be aware that some roads may be closed due to snow in winter.

La Réserve Naturelle du Massif du Grand Ventron, a national nature reserve created in 1989, is located in the heart of the Hautes-Vosges, along a secondary ridge between the Col d'Oderen and the Col de Bramont. The reserve spans 1,647 hectares, with altitudes ranging from 720 to 1,204 meters. The landscapes, shaped by glaciers, feature a vast wooded area, clear peat bogs on the Vosges side, secondary grasslands on the peaks, and large rocky scree slopes on the Haut-Rhin side. The reserve is home to a diverse range of animal and plant species, including rare and remarkable ones. Patient observers may spot wildlife such as roe deer, wild boar, foxes, and chamois. Occasionally, a lynx may even be seen. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with opportunities to spot peregrine falcons, black woodpeckers, and boreal owls. The Grand Ventron, the highest point of the massif at 1,204 meters, offers a remarkable 360-degree observation point with awe-inspiring vistas. On clear days, you can see the snow-covered Swiss Alps and even Mont Blanc in the distance. The reserve offers a network of marked trails for hikers of all levels.
