Discover more about réserve naturelle nationale de la Tourbière de Machais

The Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Tourbière de Machais, established in 1988, protects the last and most significant intact floating peat bog in the Vosges Mountains. This remarkable natural area spans 145 hectares and sits within a glacial cirque, ranging from 950 to 1,160 meters in altitude. The peat bog itself formed over 10,000 years ago from glacial melt, with organic matter accumulating to depths of up to 10 meters. Unlike many other peat bogs in France, the Tourbière de Machais has remained untouched by economic exploitation, preserving its unique environment. The reserve showcases diverse peat habitats and serves as a valuable open-air laboratory for ecological studies. Visitors can explore the area via marked hiking trails that loop around the bog. These trails, maintained by the Club Vosgien, offer a safe way to experience the landscape without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. Note that entering the central floating peat bog area is strictly prohibited to protect its delicate balance. The surrounding forests, dominated by beech and fir, show the marks of human history and are managed to balance forestry with ecological preservation. The reserve also plays a crucial role in protecting endangered species like the Grand Tetras.
