Discover more about Bougainville Park

Bougainville Park, located in the heart of Papeete, is a verdant retreat offering a blend of history, nature, and recreation. Spanning approximately 1.5 acres, the park provides a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Originally named Place Publique de Papeete, the park served as a central gathering place for festivities and ceremonies, notably the 1880 ceremony when King Pomare V ceded the Society Islands to France. In the 1840s, the park housed administrative buildings, including the military general store, port authority offices, and the post office. A cyclone in 1906 destroyed most of these buildings, though the post office was rebuilt and remains today. In 1934, the park was renamed Place Albert 1er in honor of the King of Belgium. However, in 1968, a bronze bust of French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville was installed, leading locals to call it Bougainville Park. To avoid a diplomatic issue, the city council officially maintained the name Place Albert 1er, but in 2005, it was finally renamed Parc Bougainville. Today, visitors can enjoy the park's lush tropical landscape, featuring tall trees, a stream, and a variety of plants. The park also includes benches, tables, a playground, and a traditional fare pote'e (pavilion). Two historical cannons dating back to World War I flank the bust of Bougainville.
