    Discover more about Bougainville Park

Bougainville Park, located in the heart of Papeete, is a refreshing urban oasis steeped in history and natural beauty. Named after the French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville, who arrived in Tahiti in 1768, the park provides a serene retreat from the bustling city. Originally known as Place Publique de Papeete, the park served as a central location for significant events and ceremonies, including the cession of the Society Islands to France by King Pomare V in 1880. In the 1840s, the park housed several administrative buildings, including the military general store, port authority offices, and the post office. A cyclone in 1906 destroyed most of these buildings, but the post office was rebuilt and remains the only administrative building in the park today. In 1934, the park was renamed Place Albert 1er in honor of the King of Belgium, Albert 1st. However, the locals continued to call it Bougainville Park, especially after the installation of Bougainville's bust in 1968. In 2005, the park was officially renamed Parc Bougainville. Today, visitors can enjoy the park's lush tropical landscape, complete with tall trees providing shade, a playground for children, and a traditional 'fare pote'e' pavilion. Two cannons, one from a German warship and another from a French gunboat, flank the bust of Bougainville. The park's tranquil streams, exotic plants, and historical statues create a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation and reflection.
