Discover more about Papeete Catholic Cathedral

Located on Avenue du Général de Gaulle, near the waterfront, the Papeete Catholic Cathedral is a must-see landmark in French Polynesia. Construction of the cathedral occurred in stages from 1856 to 1875, overseen by the bishop and carried out by men from Mangareva Island. The cathedral was named after its famous Parisian counterpart, Notre Dame of Paris. The cathedral's architecture features a yellow facade, three pointed arch-stained glass windows, and a hexagonal bell tower topped with a red spire. The interior blends European and Polynesian design elements, exemplified by a full-size wood carving of the Madonna and Child, with the Child holding a breadfruit. The Stations of the Cross incorporate both Tahitian and Roman cultures in the style of dress, influenced by Paul Gauguin. Over the years, the cathedral has withstood cyclones, a tidal wave, a bombardment, and rioting. It has three bells named Marie Charlotte, Emilie Octavie, and Anne Martin, blessed on December 19, 1875. The cathedral is at PK 0, marking the point from which all distances on the island are measured. Visitors can attend mass to experience the local culture's spiritual traditions. The cathedral also hosts various religious ceremonies and community events throughout the year.
