Discover more about Water Gardens Vaipahi

The Water Gardens Vaipahi, also known as Jardins d'eau de Vaipahi, is a sacred and stunning botanical garden located in Mataiea, on the west side of Tahiti. This 2.5-acre park is home to over 75 plant species and offers a blend of natural beauty and Polynesian history. For centuries, Tahitians have considered the area spiritually significant, with the Teva tribe believing the Vaimai River's water had healing properties and served as a pathway for soul purification. The centerpiece, Vaipahi Waterfall, was believed to embody the "mighty breath of the spirit of the waters". Ancient stories and signage throughout the garden in English and French, recount the legends. The gardens feature grassy lawns, ponds, streams, and waterfalls. Visitors can explore the gardens through walking paths, taking about an hour for a thorough experience. The lower botanical garden offers an easy, flat walk suitable for all fitness levels. More adventurous visitors can hike the upper trails for panoramic views. The garden wasn't much of a tourist spot until 2007 when the local government renovated it and turned it into a botanical garden.
