Getting There

Car

The most practical way to reach the Khvamli Mountain trailhead is by car. From Kutaisi, follow the Kutaisi-Tskaltubo-Tsageri-Lentekhi-Lasdili Road for approximately 55 kilometers (75 minutes). Then, ascend the mountain for another 30-40 minutes to reach the marked parking area. A taxi from Kutaisi can cost around 150 GEL. Expect to pay around 70 GEL one-way or slightly more than double that for a round-trip, including wait time while you do the hike.
Public Transport

While not ideal, you can take a marshrutka (minivan) from Kutaisi's Central Bus Station on Chavchavadze Avenue towards Tsageri. These depart three times a day at 11am, 2pm, and 4pm, with a ticket costing 10 GEL. Ask the driver to let you off at the turn-off for the Khvamli road. From there, you'll need to either hitchhike or walk the remaining 28 kilometers (6-8 hours return) to the peak.

Khvamli Mountain, also known as Khomli, is a striking natural landmark in the Lechkhumi region of Georgia, near the municipalities of Tsageri and Tskaltubo. This imposing limestone massif reaches a height of 2,002 meters (6,568 ft) and is characterized by its unique double cuesta formation and a dramatic 300-meter (984 ft) high bluff face on its southern side. Covered in lush mixed forests, Khvamli presents a captivating landscape that blends geological wonder with rich biodiversity. Beyond its natural beauty, Khvamli Mountain is deeply intertwined with Georgian history and mythology. Local legends claim it was the site where Prometheus was chained as punishment for gifting fire to humanity. In Georgian lore, it is associated with Amirani, a similar mythological figure. Historical accounts suggest that the mountain's caves served as a hiding place for the Georgian kingdom's treasures during the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. The mountain is also said to be the home of the god of weather and thunderstorms, with locals using it to predict weather patterns. The mountain boasts several caves, including Tekenteri, known for its entrance through a hollow beech tree, and the icy cave of Boga. Medieval paintings in red paint have been discovered within some of the caves, adding to the mountain's historical significance. The annual Khvamloba feast, held on the eighth Saturday after Orthodox Easter, draws many visitors to the church of St. George atop the mountain. The hike to the summit offers panoramic views of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus Mountains, as well as the surrounding regions of Imereti and Racha.
