Walking
The Heidelberger Marktplatz is located in the heart of the Altstadt (Old Town) and is easily accessible on foot from most central locations. From Universitätsplatz, walk east along Hauptstrasse for approximately 5 minutes. The Marktplatz will be on your right, marked by the Church of the Holy Spirit. From the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), walk west along Hauptstrasse for about 10 minutes. You'll find the Marktplatz on your left. The Marktplatz is a pedestrian zone.
Public Transport
The closest tram stop to the Heidelberger Marktplatz is Universitätsplatz. Several tram lines (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) stop at Universitätsplatz. From the Hauptbahnhof (main train station), take tram line 21, 24 or 26 to Bismarckplatz, then transfer to tram line 31 or 34 to Universitätsplatz. From Universitätsplatz, walk east along Hauptstrasse for approximately 5 minutes to reach the Marktplatz. A single ticket within Heidelberg costs €3.40.
Taxi/Ride-Share
Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available in Heidelberg. Simply request a ride to the Marktplatz (Heidelberger Marktplatz). Note that due to the pedestrian zone, the driver may drop you off at the edge of the Altstadt, a short walk from the square. A taxi ride from the Hauptbahnhof to the Altstadt typically costs between €12 and €18.
Driving
Driving directly to the Heidelberger Marktplatz is not possible due to the pedestrian zone. The closest parking garage is Parkhaus Kornmarkt/Schloss (P12), located at Kornmarkt 1, which also provides access to the Bergbahn (funicular) to Heidelberg Castle. Parking rates at Parkhaus Kornmarkt/Schloss are approximately €2.50 per hour during the day. Other parking garages in the Altstadt include Parkhaus Karlsplatz and Parkhaus Rathaus. Be aware that parking can be limited and expensive, especially during peak tourist season and events.
