Originally named Friedrichsbrücke, it was renamed in honor of Theodor Heuss, the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany (1949-1959), a fitting tribute to a figure who championed liberal values and democratic ideals. The bridge's history stretches back to 1877 when the Friedrichsbrücke was first inaugurated on the same site. However, the story goes back further, to Roman times, when the Neckar River was a key strategic crossing point. In 80/90 AD, the Romans built the first bridge over the Neckar in the Heidelberg area. Before the Friedrichsbrücke, a ferry service was documented in 1217. The Friedrichsbrücke was the second Heidelberg Neckar bridge next to the Old Bridge. As Heidelberg expanded, an additional bridge was planned to accommodate the increasing traffic between Heidelberg and Bergheim. The bridge was completed in 1877 and named after Elector Friedrich. The original Friedrichsbrücke was a testament to 19th-century engineering, featuring a 243-meter-long and 10-meter-wide structure with five main openings and three flood openings. It accommodated pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages, and a single-track tram line. However, by 1905, the bridge required widening to handle the growing traffic and accommodate an additional tram track. The rebuilt bridge was inaugurated on September 25, 1906, in honor of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden. During World War II, the bridge suffered significant damage, necessitating a complete reconstruction. The current Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, completed in 1992, represents a modern engineering marvel, designed to meet the demands of contemporary traffic while preserving the historical significance of the location.
