Discover more about Devil's Gap Battery

Perched high above the city on the westernmost limits of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Devil's Gap Battery offers a compelling blend of military history and scenic beauty. Originally constructed in the late 19th century, the battery was strategically positioned to defend Gibraltar. From its vantage point 130 meters (430 ft) above sea level, it commands a wide range over the Bay of Gibraltar. During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), the site mounted at least one mortar. In the late 19th century, two RML 9-inch 12-ton guns were installed. By 1902, two BL 6-inch Mk VII naval guns were mounted, enhancing its defensive capabilities. In August 1917, one of these guns sank a German submarine during World War I. The battery was active during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The battery ceased its role in 1954 but the guns remain in place. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved gun emplacements, underground magazines, and shell hoists. Maintained by volunteers on behalf of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, the battery stands as a testament to British military engineering. The site provides panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscapes.
