Discover more about O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery, located at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's strategic military importance. Named after General Charles O'Hara, Governor of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, the site was originally intended for a watchtower to monitor the Spanish port of Cadiz. However, the tower, known as O'Hara's Folly, failed in its purpose. In 1890, the battery was constructed, later armed with a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun in 1901. Its high elevation allowed it to theoretically fire across the Strait of Gibraltar to the African coast. The battery played a role in Gibraltar's defense through World War II and was last fired in training exercises in 1976. Today, O'Hara's Battery has been refurbished and opened to the public. Visitors can explore the site, including the gun emplacements, underground chambers, and observation points. The battery offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the town below. Informative plaques detail the history and significance of the site.
