Europa Point Lighthouse, also known as the Trinity Lighthouse, is an iconic structure located at the southernmost point of Gibraltar. Completed in 1841, it has served as a crucial navigational aid for vessels passing through the Strait of Gibraltar, the gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The lighthouse is managed by Trinity House, making it the only one of their lighthouses located outside of the British Isles.The lighthouse stands 20 meters tall, rising 49 meters above sea level. Its light can be seen for approximately 37 kilometers. Originally, the light was produced by a single-wick oil lamp, but it has undergone several upgrades over the years, including the introduction of a four-wick burner in 1864 and full automation in 1994. In 2016, the rotating optic was replaced with LED lanterns.Europa Point itself is a significant location steeped in history and offers visitors several attractions in addition to the lighthouse. From this vantage point, one can see the coast of North Africa and the meeting of two oceans. Other notable sites at Europa Point include the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, the Sikorski Memorial, and various historical fortifications. The area is also a popular spot for birdwatching, with migratory birds frequently passing through.
