The Area of Stenopos Kollytos offers a captivating glimpse into the residential and commercial life of ancient Athens. Situated at the foot of the Acropolis, near Thrasyllou Street and Philopappos Hill, this archaeological site was once part of the deme (district) of Kollytos, one of the wealthiest areas of the city and home to prominent figures like Plato and Peisistratos. Excavations in the late 19th century unearthed a 4-meter-wide road, revealing the foundations of houses, workshops, and shrines that stood here from the 5th century BCE to the Roman period. While the structures are largely in ruins today, the site provides valuable insights into the urban layout and architectural styles of the time. One of the most significant finds is the "House of the Roman Mosaic," a private residence from the 2nd century CE featuring a mosaic floor depicting two parrots drinking from a vase. Although the site is not always open to the public, the mosaic is often visible behind railings. Other notable structures include the 6th-century BC Shrine of Heracles Alexikakos (later the site of the 2nd-century Baccheion), the Leschi (a 4th-century BC club for the homeless), and the Amyneion, a sanctuary dedicated to the hero Amynos and the healer Asclepius. Walking along Apostolou Pavlou, the pedestrian street that traverses the site, visitors can imagine the bustling activity that once filled this area. The Stenopos Kollytos offers a serene escape from the modern city, allowing one to connect with the daily lives of ancient Athenians.
