Discover more about Lighthouse of Chania

The Lighthouse of Chania, an iconic landmark, graces the entrance of Chania's Venetian Harbor, embodying the city's vibrant history. Originally constructed by the Venetians between 1595 and 1601, it served as a crucial navigational aid and a defensive structure against the Ottoman Empire. The lighthouse was built using sandstone from Stavros, a coastal area northeast of the city. During the Ottoman occupation, the lighthouse fell into disrepair. In 1838, under the direction of Mustapha Pasha, the lighthouse was rebuilt by the Egyptians, who then controlled Crete. The reconstruction incorporated architectural elements reminiscent of a minaret, reflecting Islamic design influences. The lighthouse's design is a fusion of styles, with an octagonal base, a hexadecagonal middle section, and a circular top. A spiral stone staircase leads to the lantern. The lighthouse stands 21 meters tall, with its light visible from 7 nautical miles. In 1864, it was placed under the control of a French company. During World War II, the lighthouse sustained damage but was later restored. A major renovation between 2003 and 2006 ensured its preservation. Today, the Lighthouse of Chania is a major tourist attraction, offering breathtaking views, especially at sunrise or sunset. Visitors can walk along the breakwater to reach the lighthouse, experiencing the charm of the Venetian harbor.
