Discover more about Trimartiri, Chania's Cathedral Church

The Trimartiri Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Chania, is a significant religious and historical site located in the heart of Chania's Old Town. Its name, meaning "Three Martyrs," refers to Saints Antonios, Ioannis, and Eugenios. The cathedral stands on the site of a 14th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, during the Venetian era. During Ottoman rule, the church was repurposed as a soap factory, with the icon of the Virgin Mary protected and a candle kept lit in its honor. In 1860, the cathedral was rebuilt as a three-aisled basilica, a design that gives the church its name. The architecture reflects Venetian influences, with sculpted columns, arches, and a prominent bell tower. The interior features impressive frescoes by renowned Cretan artists. The cathedral has been damaged during the Cretan Revolution in 1897 and during World War II in 1941, but was restored each time. Today, Trimartiri Cathedral serves as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Chania and remains a focal point for both locals and visitors, hosting religious services and cultural events.
