Located approximately 16 km west of Chania, near the village of Maleme, the German Military Cemetery (Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof) is a poignant reminder of the Battle of Crete during World War II. The cemetery is the final resting place for 4,465 German soldiers, most of whom were young paratroopers who lost their lives during the invasion of Crete in May 1941. The cemetery was founded in 1974 by a former German commander, General Gericke. The German War Graves Commission maintains the site. The design of the cemetery incorporates the four main battle areas of Crete: Chania, Maleme, Rethymnon, and Heraklion. Visitors can see the still-existing military airfield from the cemetery. The entrance hall displays a short history of the Battle of Crete, including the Cretans who died in the same battle. Simple granite slabs mark the graves, with names and dates etched into the stone. A memorial commemorates the 360 soldiers whose remains were never found. Benches are placed under old olive trees, offering visitors a space for contemplation.
