Getting there

Walking

From Spianada Square in Corfu Town, walk towards the Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio). Enter the fortress and follow the signs to the Byzantine Collection, located within the complex. The walk from the square to the fortress entrance is approximately 5-10 minutes. Entrance to the Old Fortress is €6 for adults.

Public Transport

Take Blue Bus line 2A to the Old Fortress. The bus will drop you off near the entrance to Spianada Square, from where you can walk to the fortress. A single bus fare costs between €1.10 and €1.80. Entrance to the Old Fortress is €6 for adults.

Taxi

Take a taxi from anywhere in Corfu Town to the Old Fortress. Taxi ranks are available at the airport, port, and in Corfu Town. Ensure the driver starts the meter; the base fare should be €3.60. The taxi ride should take approximately 5-10 minutes from most locations in Corfu Town. Entrance to the Old Fortress is €6 for adults.

Parking

If driving, paid parking is available near the Old Fortress. Parking can be found in the main square for approximately €3-4. Alternatively, try the car park at Liston or the seafront road in Garitsa Bay. Parking Corfu 2 is another option, about a 5-minute walk to the city center, costing €7 per day. Be aware that parking can be challenging during peak tourist season. Entrance to the Old Fortress is €6 for adults.

Overview

The Corfu Byzantine Collection, nestled inside the iconic Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio), offers a captivating journey into Corfu's Byzantine past. The collection is located within the main gate of the Old Fortress. It features approximately 40 exhibits from the old Byzantine collection of the Museum of Asian Art.Created in 1959 and completed in 1970, the collection includes mosaics and sculptures from Palaiopolis, architectural elements from other Byzantine temples, and wall paintings from the church of Ag. Nikolaou Korakianas. The icons on display date from the 15th to the 19th centuries, reflecting Corfu's role in the development of Greek ecclesiastical iconography, especially after Cretan painters arrived in Corfu in 1664.The Old Fortress itself provides a stunning backdrop, with panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. After your visit, take time to explore the fortress, a historical landmark constructed by the Venetians in the 16th century.
