The Corfu Byzantine Collection, nestled inside the iconic Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio), offers a captivating journey into Corfu's Byzantine past. The collection is located within the main gate of the Old Fortress. It features approximately 40 exhibits from the old Byzantine collection of the Museum of Asian Art. Created in 1959 and completed in 1970, the collection includes mosaics and sculptures from Palaiopolis, architectural elements from other Byzantine temples, and wall paintings from the church of Ag. Nikolaou Korakianas. The icons on display date from the 15th to the 19th centuries, reflecting Corfu's role in the development of Greek ecclesiastical iconography, especially after Cretan painters arrived in Corfu in 1664. The Old Fortress itself provides a stunning backdrop, with panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. After your visit, take time to explore the fortress, a historical landmark constructed by the Venetians in the 16th century.
