The monument was erected by the people of Korkyra to honor Menekrates' contributions to the city.Discovered in 1843 during demolition work by the British army, the monument features an inscription in the Corinthian alphabet, one of the oldest surviving Greek inscriptions. The inscription recounts Menekrates' story and the community's recognition of his work. The architectural style of the cenotaph dates back to 570/540 BC, with a unique parallel found in Lindos of Rhodes.The monument consists of five structures of soft, yellowish, local porphyry. While the conical roof is not original, it is believed to resemble the original design.
