The Holy Monastery of Platytera, formally known as the Holy Monastery of the Most Holy Mother of God Platytera, offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Corfu Town. Founded in 1743 by the monk Chrysanthos Syropoulos during Venetian rule, the monastery has deep roots in Corfu's history.Its bell tower and peaceful garden provide a calming atmosphere for reflection. The monastery's history is intertwined with the island's past, having provided refuge to locals during the French-Russian-Turkish war in 1799, though it suffered damage during the siege. The monastery was burned down by the French in 1798 but was restored in 1800.Inside, visitors can pay respects to Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of independent Greece, as well as members of his family who are buried here. The monastery also houses the tombs of other notable figures, including Fotos Tzavelas, a hero of the Greek Revolution. The monastery holds a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary. The iconostasis features elaborate wood carvings adorned with gold and silver. The monastery celebrates its feast day on August 15th, the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
