New Venetian Fortress: A Testament to Corfu's Enduring Strength

Rising above Corfu Town on St. Mark's Hill, the New Venetian Fortress (Νέο Φρούριο) is a formidable testament to the island's history and the enduring influence of Venetian rule. Constructed between 1576 and 1645 by the Venetians, the fortress, also known as Fortezza Nuova, was designed by the renowned Italian military engineer Ferrante Vitelli to bolster the city's defenses following the first great Ottoman siege of Corfu in 1537.The fortress is a complex of robust buildings and fortifications, featuring two main gates adorned with the emblem of Venice, the winged lion of Saint Mark. Its architecture includes bastions like Scarponas and Epta Anemoi (Seven Winds), offering commanding views. Constructed in stages, the fortress involved the use of materials sourced from the ancient city of Paleopolis, highlighting the blend of Corfu's past with its Venetian present.Over the centuries, the New Fortress has undergone several modifications, including additions by the British during their rule of the Ionian Islands (1815-1863). The British also ordered the destruction of the sea defenses of the New Fortress when Corfu was united with Greece in 1864.
