Getting there

Walking

From Chania's Old Town, make your way towards the Venetian Harbour. Follow the stone path along the east side of the pier. The walk takes about 15-20 minutes, offering scenic views of waterfront cafes and historical landmarks. Remember to wear comfortable shoes.

Overview

The Lighthouse of Chania is a symbol of the city, gracing tourist brochures and souvenirs alike. Constructed by the Venetians between 1595 and 1601, it served as a crucial navigational aid. During the Ottoman occupation, the lighthouse fell into disrepair but was reconstructed in the 1830s under Egyptian rule. This reconstruction gave the lighthouse its unique architectural blend, incorporating elements of Ottoman and Egyptian design.The lighthouse stands 21 meters tall, its tower divided into three distinct sections: an octagonal base, a sixteen-sided middle, and a circular top. The base is constructed from the same stone used to fortify the city by the Venetians. Though no longer operational, the lighthouse remains a major attraction, drawing visitors with its magnificent architecture and historical significance.Visitors can walk along the pier to reach the lighthouse, enjoying scenic views of the harbor. The best time to visit is during sunset, when the harbor is bathed in magical colors. The lighthouse is a favorite walking area for both locals and tourists, offering a romantic setting and stunning views.
